Karen Liivoja, Registered Psychotherapist

Choosing a therapist is a personal decision. Finding someone you feel comfortable with matters just as much as finding someone with the right training.

I'm Karen, a Registered Psychotherapist, educator, and lifelong learner. For more than 25 years, I've worked as an educator, supporting children, teens, and families through academic, emotional, and developmental challenges. Those experiences continue to shape the therapist I am today.

Over the years, I came to realize that while education could support learning and development, many people were carrying struggles that couldn't be solved with practical strategies alone. They needed a space to process grief, navigate relationship challenges, make sense of life's transitions, and simply feel heard. That realization inspired me to pursue psychotherapy so I could support people in a deeper, more meaningful way.

Today, I have the privilege of working with preteens, teens, and adults navigating grief, anxiety, relationship challenges, identity shifts, and life's many transitions. I believe therapy is most effective when it feels like a genuine partnership—one built on trust, curiosity, and mutual respect.

My role isn't to have all the answers or tell you what to do. Instead, I strive to create a space where you feel safe to explore what's bringing you to therapy. Together, we'll move at a pace that feels right for you, guided by your goals, values, and experiences. My approach is grounded in evidence-based practice, drawing from Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), mindfulness-based approaches, and other therapeutic modalities that best fit your unique needs.

Although my professional path began in education, I continue to bring that perspective into every therapy session. Years spent supporting children, teens, and families taught me the importance of patience, resilience, and meeting people where they are. Those lessons remain at the heart of my work today.

I hold a Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology from Yorkville University and a Master of Science in Education from Medaille University. I have also completed training in SafeTALK, ASIST, and Violence Threat Risk Assessment (VTRA), reflecting my commitment to ethical, trauma-informed, evidence-based care. I provide psychotherapy in both English and French.

Outside of the therapy room, you'll often find me travelling, spending time in nature, enjoying a good cup of coffee, or planning my next adventure. I believe the experiences that shape us—both joyful and difficult—help us better understand ourselves and others. Whether I'm walking a shoreline, exploring a new place, or spending time with family and friends, those moments remind me of the importance of slowing down, staying curious, and appreciating the journey we're on.

If you're considering therapy, you don't need to have everything figured out before reaching out. Whether you're navigating a specific challenge or simply feeling that something isn't quite right, I'd be happy to meet with you for a free 20-minute consultation. It's an opportunity to ask questions, learn more about my approach, and decide whether working together feels like the right fit.

Wherever you are in your journey, I'd be honoured to walk alongside you.
